Two Rivers Gallery offers Plein Air Workshop June 2023

Saturday June 17   9am-1pm
Taught by Brad Brisbine
Six students took the gallery's first Plein Air workshop

The class was held at Walla Walla Point Park at the South Shelter.  The first hour was instruction into the principals of what makes an effective painting.

Participants were given a list of art supplies needed for painting on site and how to choose a subject. Most attending have skills in painting and show their work in public settings but wanted to improve their comfort level about painting in the environment (en plein air).

Here Brad offers advice to Lindsey Bloomfield, as Sasha Syssoeva Fair works on her preliminary sketch.

Instructor Brad Brisbine has been painting on site, outside for many years and has been an advocate of getting artists to paint outdoors.  Brad encouraged Two Rivers Gallery to offer a competitive activity in 2011 that began our first Plein Air Paint-Out contest with prizes.  The first contest was to paint Saddle Rock during the ceremony where the Land Trust gave that prominent point to the city to be used as a park. The contest became an annual event.

Instructor Brad Brisbine assisted each painter with suggestions on color values and more. Here, Brad gives Steve Schwind tips on his painting.

Carl Ericsen painting with acrylic paints.  Carl has enjoyed painting plein air for years.  He wanted to pick up some skills from an expert painter.

Lisa King paints from the shade and comfort of the South Shelter.  The Apple Capital Loop Trail has many places that would be perfect for next weeks Plein Air Paint-Out.

This year the subject is the 30th Anniversary of the Apple Capital Loop Trail. The prizes are $300 first place, $150 second place and $50 third place. Anyone may enter.  Bring your canvas, paper or board to Two Rivers Gallery Friday, June 23 between 3-5pm for branding. There is a $20 fee to participate.

Find a good place to paint anywhere along the Apple Capital Loop Trail on Saturday, June 24th and Sunday, June 25th.  Bring one of 2 paintings back to the gallery by 3pm Sunday.

Winners will show their framed paintings at Two Rivers Gallery on First Friday in July and throughout the month. Full details/rules can be found at https://2riversgallery.org/special-events
